Special thanks to Ali Spagnola for the footage. Why not come thank her in person at our show on June 25th, 9pm at Molly Malone's?

Friday night's LA Qualifier for the US Air Guitar Championships was a blast. The airness on display was epic! Congratulations are in order for our winners, who will be moving on to compete at the Southwest Semifinal, July 19th at the legendary Troubadour. 1st place was Kingslayer, 2nd place was Soulstice, and 3rd place went to Gwarana.
A video recap and more extensive coverage will be coming soon.
Special shout outs to The Viper Room for being an amazing venue; to our judges Bryan Bishop, Christian Cinn, Melina Perez, and Fatima "Rockness Monster" Hoang; and to Tim Curns for taking the reigns as Air Traffic Control and pressing play like a boss. Thank you to all of the competitors for bringing it hard; there wouldn't be a show without you.
Lastly thanks to everyone who came out to the show and we look forward to seeing you again at the semifinals!
It's the day of the show y'all! Tonight, 9pm at The Viper Room, the LA Qualifier for the US Air Guitar Championships is going down. As we kick off the new air guitar season, our final Great Moment in Los Angeles Air Guitar history is the end of this past season, when Lt. Facemelter won the US Championship.
Los Angeles was given the honor of hosting last year's US Air Guitar National Championship, which rocked the House of Blues Sunset on August 17 2013. San Diego's Jason "Lt. Facemelter" Farnan, a perennial finalist, had delivered a dominant first round performance and was back on stage for Round 2. In a new twist, the compulsory song was a new composition written and performed live on stage by Brendan Small (of Metalocalypse fame). Lt. Facemelter came out when it was his turn, and with the help of a giant cardboard cutout of his face, delivered a blistering performance that seemed rehearsed for months. There was no doubt about it, Lt. Facemelter was our new US Air Guitar Champion.
Today, we salute you Lt. Facemelter!
Tonight we search for LA's best air guitarists to represent us on the national stage. This is your chance to possibly witness the birth of the next Lt. Facemelter. Can our champion go on to dethrone him? Get your ass down to The Viper Room and find out. Tickets are available here: http://tinyurl.com/airguitarlatickets. Let's rock and f'ing roll!
We are excited to make one final judge announcement. Our beautiful Playboy Bunny judge from last year, Christiana Cinn, will be joining us again! She has an 8 page spread in the current issue of Hustler; bring one to get an autograph!
It all goes down tomorrow night at The Viper Room, 9pm. Tickets are available here: http://tinyurl.com/airguitarlatickets , and if you want to try and impress her by competing, you may still do so here: https://2014usagqclosangeles.eventbrite.com
Tomorrow is the big day LA. We're going to determine who is the best air guitarist in Los Angeles and who will represent us at the semi-finals. In the spirit of that, we continue our series highlighting great moments in our city's air guitar history. Today let's recognize a fixture in the Los Angeles air guitar scene, Fatima "Rockness Monster" Hoang.
Rockness is the 2004, 2005 and 2007 Los Angeles Regional Champion, the 2008 San Diego Regional Champion, and the 2005 US Champion. He was a judge here last year, and will be sitting in the chair again this year. In particular I want to highlight his most infamous and badass moment. In 2007 at the Key Club (RIP), he literally WALKED ON TOP OF THE AUDIENCE, like an air guitar messiah. It was the very definition of epic. Check it out below (the moment of glory is at 3:00).
Air Guitar LA salutes you Rockness Monster!
Tickets for the show tomorrow are still available. Get 'em before they disappear into thin air (seewhatididthere)! http://tinyurl.com/airguitarlatickets
3 days away from the 2014 LA Qualifier (don't forget to buy tickets: http://tinyurl.com/airguitarlatickets), and we continue our tribute to the history of air guitar in Los Angeles. Today, I'd like to look back at Nordic Thunder's appearance on Lopez Tonight.
After winning the 2011 US Championships, Justin "Nordic Thunder" Howard was flown out here to LA to appear on Lopez Tonight, which filmed on the WB lot in Burbank. As I was working on the lot at the time, I had the pleasure of joining him for the taping.
First of all, George Lopez had the entire backstage area modeled to look like someone's house and yard; the green room was the living room with sliding glass doors, the VIP dressing rooms were like a guest house, and it all surrounded an astroturf yard with ping pong table and putting green.
Speaking of the green room, it was kickass, with a nice spread of food and a full bar. You better believe we took FULL advantage of that!
Who else happened to be on the show that night? Shaggy and Tim Gunn. That's right, we got to chill with Mr. Boombastic himself and Nordic got a critique of his costume from the brains behind Project Runway! (In his words "interesting", although he got a kick out of it.)
When it was time for Nordic's segment, all the staff and crew backstage stopped what they were doing to watch. (I didn't see them do that for Shaggy!) It was epic, with pyrotechnics and the works. He couldn't have represented air guitar better. He even sat on the couch for a 5 minute chat with George and Tim Gunn after.
It was a fun time, and Nordic proved why he is one of the world's great ambassadors of air guitar. Today, we salute you Nordic Thunder!
But why not just watch it for yourself? Here is the full video of Nordic Thunder's appearance on Lopez Tonight.
With the LA Qualifier coming up this Friday, we're revisiting more great moments in the history of Los Angeles air guitar.
Today it's the LA champion from US Air Guitar's inaugural 2003 season. Gordon "Krye Tuff" Hintz conquered stiff competition to win LA, then immediately had to battle it out for the national championship, ultimately falling to the legendary David "C-Diddy" Jung. He'll always be LA's first though, and we all know how special our first is. Today, we salute you Krye Tuff!
Don't forget to buy tickets for the 2014 LA Qualifier on 6/6 to see who will follow in Krye Tuff's footsteps this year: http://tinyurl.com/airguitarlatickets
